After seven blessed years of being a full-time Mom, I went back to work in 1987 as a telephone operator for  AT&T. It might have been a bean-packing plant for all I cared. It was five minutes from home and ten from the school. The pay was great, and eventually, there would be bennies.

They also offered the dreaded split shift, which was perfect for my family. I did a few hours in the morning while Jake was in nursery school, and he and I were waiting when Colin got off the bus. After dinner, Jimmy was in charge, and I worked a few more hours. It was deadly slow in the evening. Slow enough for me to dream up this little side hustle.

I had been making and selling denim bags at craft fairs in the years when Jake was still portable. It didn't take too long to draw this up - I could make them in my sleep.

Then I took out a one-inch ad in the back of a craft magazine, and requests (and dollar bills) rolled in. I let the boys open the mail. Colin thought it was hilarious. I charged 3$ plus a stamped self-addressed envelope. Remember those?

I haven't looked these over in years, but I never had any complaints or requests for refunds so, have at it
